Osun Workers Plan To Boycott Workers Day Celebrations

Workers in Osun state have agreed to boycott the activities to mark the 2015 workers day celebrations due to the non-payment of five months salaries by the state government.
Making this known to Punch in Osogbo on Tuesday, April 21, Mr. Francis Adetunji, the factional Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, said the entire workers in Osun had unilaterally agreed to boycott the workers day celebration in the state so as to express their grievances  over their unpaid wages.Image result for aregbesola

He said: “No May Day celebration this year. That is the decision of the entire workers in Osun State. We cannot be celebrating when workers have not been paid a dime since the beginning of the year.
“The last salary we were paid was part-payment of November salary. Since then, we have not collected any salary. We will not celebrate the May Day because our salaries are not paid.”
On rumours that the proposed boycott by the workers was because Governor Rauf Aregbesola refused to approve the budget proposal for the Workers’ Day celebration. Mr. Francis Adetunji described such claims as false.
“There was nothing like that. We did not present any budget before the government concerning Workers’ Day.
“ We are hungry. I am very serious, our workers are very hungry and only those who are close to workers will know the severity of this hunger.”  he said.
The TUC factional chairman noted that the only request they had made to the state governor was for their salaries to be paid.
He said the Aregbesola administration had done well in infrastructural development but scored the administration low regarding regular payment of workers’ salaries.
Meanwhile, Governor Rauf Aregbesola last month opened up on his inability to pay the salaries of workers in the state for five months, blaming it on“declining federal allocation.”  He said he was deeply pained and unhappy that he had not been able to pay workers salaries.
